BMW® Company History

BMW® began as an aviation and engine manufacturing company, which is why their logo still looks like two propellers against the blue sky. However, BMW® quickly found success in manufacturing other types of vehicles, including one of the original motorcycles. After Germany was banned from manufacturing aircraft after their loss during World War I, BMW® was forced to transition full-time into the motorcycle industry. Their first model was a simple pedal bike with an industrial engine attached, but they quickly began developing bikes that were more customized for road travel at high speeds.

The motorcycle business was put on pause during World War II as Germany required all factories to begin manufacturing for the military effort. Production was further halted after the war due to facility damage and a two-year ban on manufacturing within the country.

Once the ban was lifted BMW® again got back into the motorcycle manufacturing business, with sales divided between East and West Germany. Sales slumped across the rest of the planet though, especially since BMW® had lost precious market share to other brands during their production ban. Their reputation began to grow as they began producing the first series of "luxury" motorcycles that would start a trend for the company as a whole. If you think of luxury cars when you think of the name BMW®, you can thank their initial push into the luxury motorcycle market!
